Have Scotland already reached the knockout stages of the Euros? Steve Clarke’s men face an unmissable clash

Scotland continue their Euro 2024 campaign this evening and they must win to book their place in the round of 16.

The Tartan Army don’t have the best record at the European Championship, but after a draw against Switzerland they could be on the verge of making history.

Steve Clarke’s men suffered a heavy defeat against hosts Germany in their opening match of this summer’s tournament.

However, avoiding defeat against Switzerland has kept their hopes alive and they must now beat Hungary, live on talkSPORT, to progress.

Have Scotland already reached the knockout stages of the Euros?

Scotland’s relationship with UEFA’s international flagship has been hazy at best.

Since its creation in 1960, the Tartan Army has only played in three tournaments and has never reached the round of 16.

The first took place in 1992, followed by one in 1996 and the last one in 2020.

During this period, their lack of progress meant they only played nine matches at the European Championship.

Of these nine, Scotland have won two, one in 1992 and one in 1996.

Over the three tournaments, the Tartan Army scored five goals and conceded ten.

Their last experience at the Euros was a bit chaotic as they failed to win a match, despite playing two matches at home.

Scotland managed a 0-0 draw with England at Wembley, but defeats at Hampden by both the Czech Republic and Croatia saw them finish bottom of the group.

This time, the Scots are in a group with Germany, Hungary and Switzerland.

Two teams will definitely qualify for the knockout stages of Euro 2024 and Germany are already qualified, with Switzerland also set to progress.

However, third place could also be enough and a victory against Hungary will allow Scotland to make history in this competition.
