Havana Syndrome linked to Russian military agency GRU, investigation indicates – POLITICO

Now, the evidence collected by the three media outlets shows links to GRU Unit 29155, an entity entirely dedicated to assassinations and political destabilization. “Their mission is to find, repair and complete, all in support of Vladimir Putin’s imperial dreams,” a former high-ranking CIA officer told Insider.

The clues include the geolocation of Russian agents in locations around the world before or during the outbreak of Havana Syndrome – officially known within the US government as Anomalous Health Incidents, or AHIs. The patients also identified Russian agents known to have worked in the unit from photos, the investigation highlights.

The use of directed energy weapons is believed to be the cause of Havana Syndrome – and senior members of Unit 29155 received awards for developing “non-lethal acoustic weapons”, the investigation reports.

Additionally, the health incidents may not have started in the Cuban capital in 2016, as initially thought, but rather at the US consulate in Frankfurt in 2014, a few months after Putin’s illegal annexation of Crimea.

Most recently, nearly a dozen U.S. officials suffered an attack involving symptoms of Havana syndrome ahead of a 2021 visit by U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris to Hanoi, 60 Minutes reported. As part of the investigation, evidence emerged that Russia could send long-range acoustic weapons to foreign governments like Vietnam.

A U.S. intelligence report last year found it was “highly unlikely” that a foreign adversary was involved in the disease. According to AHI victims contacted by the media, the US government has not officially recognized the cause of this syndrome.
