Hathras accident: 15 dead, 16 injured in bus-van collision; PM announces Rs 2 lakh gratuity

At least 15 people, including four women and as many children, were killed after a highway bus collided with a van on National Highway 93 in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district on Friday, September 6. Sixteen others were injured in the accident, which occurred when one vehicle tried to overtake another, leading to the fatal accident, according to District Magistrate Ashish Kumar.

The collision took place near Kanwarpur village, about 10 kilometres from the district headquarters. The victims were travelling in a van en route to Agra when a highway bus hit their vehicle from behind.

Police Commissioner Nipun Agarwal said: “The bus hit the van while trying to overtake it, causing the van to overturn and leading to many deaths.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences via X (formerly Twitter), saying, “The news of the road accident in Hathras is heartbreaking. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. The injured will be provided with all necessary treatment.” The prime minister also announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh for the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has asked local officials to expedite relief efforts and ensure proper treatment of the injured. “The district administration has been asked to take all necessary steps to help the victims and their families,” the chief minister’s office said.

President Droupadi Murmu also expressed her grief. “The news of several people being killed in a road accident in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh is extremely sad. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families who have lost their loved ones and pray for a speedy recovery of the injured,” Murmu said in a message in Hindi on X.

Rescue workers transported the injured to a public hospital, where they are receiving treatment.
