As Harry Kane continues his quest for the Bundesliga title, he will soon face someone he may not have seen in over a decade.
Kane’s Bayern Munich look to continue their perfect start to the season with a trip to northern Germany where they will face Holstein Kiel for only the second time in their incredible history.
Kiel have been promoted to the top flight for the first time in their history ahead of the 2024/25 season, and fans were rewarded with a visit from the record champions after just three games.
Kiel were promoted thanks to a number of cult heroes, but none more cult than Kane’s former Tottenham team-mate Lewis Holtby.
The name will certainly be familiar to many Premier League fans, as the midfielder made 38 appearances in England’s top flight across four seasons with Spurs and Fulham, registering two goals and five assists.
Holtby, whose father is English, joined Spurs in 2013 from Schalke but failed to make an impact at White Hart Lane.
His last appearance for the London side came at the start of the 2014/15 season in a Europa League qualifier against AEL Limassol, and he lined up alongside Kane for the seventh and final time.
This match took place over a decade ago, with Holtby having been on loan at Fulham and then Hamburg, before joining the latter permanently.
Holtby would then return to England with Blackburn in 2019, spending two seasons in the Championship before joining his current club, Kiel.
The three-time Germany international was vital to the club’s promotion push, scoring a number of key goals, and Kane’s Bayern will have to be careful, especially if history is anything to go by.
The two teams have only met once before, in 2021 in the DFB-Pokal. The second-round match at the Holstein-Stadion ended 2-2 after regular time, before Kiel prevailed on penalties.
Bayern will still be confident of getting revenge this weekend, given they have two wins from two games and the home side have lost their opening two league games.
Kane opened his Bundesliga season tally in one of those games against Freiburg, while he added another in the cup against Ulm.
Kane could even break a Bundesliga record this weekend.
If he scores three goals against Kiel, he would reach 50 goals in the German top division in just 35 games.
It would be the fastest total ever reached by anyone, including Erling Haaland who did it in 43 games.
And that will give Kane eight chances to succeed – and you imagine he won’t waste them.
Bayern’s results so far this season see them gaining ground on the team that could be their main title challenger, defending champions Bayer Leverkusen.
Xabi Alonso’s side saw their 43-game unbeaten league run end against Leipzig, who came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at the BayArena and join Bayern and Heidenheim on six points.
