Ian Sams, a spokesman for Vice President Harris’ campaign, took a light-hearted dig at Fox News anchor Dana Perino during an interview Friday.
“Is it a risk to put all of her assets on one debate when she hasn’t really had a chance to do a Q&A with anybody except to prepare for the debate?” Perino asked Sams on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom,” referring to Harris.
Sams replied: “Well, I reject that, she sat down with Dana Bash for a long interview on CNN…”
Perino interjected: “An interview in 47 days?”
Later in the conversation, he claimed the host was acting as if Harris was “in the witness protection program.”
“She traveled across key states, speaking to thousands of people in packed arenas,” added Sams, who previously served as an oversight spokesperson in the White House counsel’s office.
Before Harris’ recent interview with Bash, she faced increasing pressure to respond to an interview following her rise to the top of the Democratic ticket after President Biden decided to drop out of the race. Harris gave the interview to her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D), for which she also came under scrutiny.
“It’s clear that her team and her party think she needs a babysitter,” Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R) said last week. “And that’s why they put her running mate on stage with her, so he can jump in and answer questions if things play out like the clips we just saw, like she has in previous interviews.”
Despite the criticism, the vice president survived the interview without making any major gaffes or making any major news.
Sams’ defense comes as Harris and former President Trump are set to face off in a debate Tuesday night hosted by ABC News.
In the last presidential debate, Biden’s disappointing performance led Democrats to call on him to withdraw from the race. He ultimately made that decision in late July, throwing his support behind Harris.
