Harris says ‘democracy can be fragile’ as she prepares to certify Trump’s election victory
Today’s joint session of Congress to certify Donald Trumpthe electoral victory will be chaired by the vice president Kamala Harrisin her ceremonial capacity as President of the Senate.
Harris, of course, was Trump’s opponent in the November presidential election and is now tasked with making his victory official. Such a scenario has already happened – Al Gore certified his opponent George W. Bushthe victory of 2001, and Richard Nixon does the same thing for John F. Kennedy in 1961.
In a video released earlier today, Harris said she was honored to play a role in the peaceful transfer of power between US presidents, while nodding to the January 6 insurrection there is four years old. Here’s what she had to say:

Hello, readers of the American political blog. It is January 6, the legally designated day when the Senate and House of Representatives meet in joint session to certify the results of the presidential election – in this case, Donald Trumpvictory two months ago. Today’s meeting comes four years after supporters of the then-president stormed the Capitol after he addressed them outside the White House, a historic attack that the successor of Trump, Joe Bidentried, unsuccessfully, to have him prosecuted. There is no indication that these events will occur again this year. Washington DC is hit by a snowstorm that has clogged roads in parts of the East Coast and Midwest, the Capitol is under heavy surveillance and, unlike Republicans who in 2021 have attempted to use procedural measures to prevent Biden from taking office, no congressional Democrats were elected. signaled their intention to oppose Trump’s re-election during the session.
