Hard Knocks shows how the Giants got used to Malik Nabers

The current edition of Hard knocks follows the Giants through their offseason and shows some of the machinations that went on behind the scenes before they made moves in recent months.

One of the team’s biggest decisions was selecting receiver Malik Nabers with the sixth overall pick. There was no questioning Nabers’ talent or his production at LSU, but scout Chris Hamel noted in the second episode that Nabers plays with “a big chip on his shoulder” and that “you’ll hear about it” if the receiver doesn’t feel like he’s getting the ball often enough. He ended his report by saying the Giants “need to get around this kid and see if we can work with him, because there’s a lot of personality.”

During Nabers’ interview with general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, he was honest about how much he hated losing and not getting the ball. Daboll said there were times he lost it too, but “you have to learn to exploit that” to be successful in the NFL.

The episode then shows Schoen discussing Nabers with assistant general manager Brandon Brown, who says he’s less concerned about Nabers than he is about the quarterback’s ability to build a relationship with a player with the receiver’s build.

“That’s the thing,” Brown said. “Name me one dominant player at that position or corner or pass rusher who was an altar boy. He gives us something we don’t have. He’s not my favorite guy. Whoever the Q is, can he handle him?”

Schoen responded by saying that Daniel Jones had positive things to say about Nabers and that how well they get along in the coming months will be a factor in how long Jones remains the quarterback tasked with getting the ball to Nabers and the rest of the Giants.
