German legend Lothar Matthäus has shared his thoughts on Hansi Flick’s move to Barcelona and advised the former Bayern boss to succeed.
Flick is expected to be announced as the club’s new manager next week following Xavi’s departure.
Matthaus believes Flick is a perfect fit for the Catalans and will do a good job at the Camp Nou.
“I am very happy for Hansi. He had been in contact with FC Barcelona for a long time, the club had sent him probes. Hansi has been patient and can now join an absolute world-class club,” he told Bild.
“Hansi’s style suits Barcelona. He wants his teams to play offensively and attractively. With Ter Stegen, Gündogan and Lewandowski, he immediately has three people with whom he can identify, which is important. He named Ilkay Gündogan captain of the DFB, which demonstrates their special relationship.”
Flick may have to work under financial constraints at Barcelona, but Matthaus believes that is not a problem and he can continue to build a very special team.
“Barcelona has very talented players and, despite the difficult economic situation, always finds a way to make transfers. Moreover, there are many gems in the club that Hansi, known as a talent promoter, will polish,” he added.
“Barcelona represented spectacle and great football under Pep Guardiola. Hansi can bring back that magic.
Flick is believed to have wanted to manage Barcelona for a long time, and he will finally get his chance next season as he returns to management for the first time since leaving his role as Germany manager.
