Hackers Stole $35K From Anti-Trump Super PAC Lincoln Project: Report

  • The Lincoln Project, a prominent super PAC, lost $35,000 to hackers via fraudulent transactions.
  • The group said one of its suppliers was hacked and sent it invoices that appeared to be genuine.
  • The Lincoln Project, which opposes Trump, said the loss would not affect its operations.

A prominent super PAC opposing former President Donald Trump was scammed out of $35,000 by hackers, according to Raw Story.

In its filings with the FEC, the Lincoln Project flagged two February transactions, for $15,000 and $20,000, as “disputed” and marked as “fraudulent.”

A spokesperson, Greg Minchak, told Raw Story: “A supplier’s email was hacked, with the hackers producing authentic-looking invoices that were sent from our legitimate email account. supplier. »

The Lincoln Project did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment, sent outside of US business hours.

The hack affected several customers of the unnamed provider, Minchak told the outlet.

The Lincoln Project took immediate steps to alleviate the problem, he added, including improving the way it confirms payments and notifying its bank’s fraud department.

The hack “had no impact on our operations in the fight for a democratic future for our nation,” Minchak said.

The Lincoln Project went public in 2019 as a hub for disillusioned conservatives to signal their dislike of MAGA Republicanism.

The group has raised more than $87 million this election cycle, according to Open Secrets — thanks in part to its scrappy and sometimes controversial approach to advertising.

Its fundraising is much more low-key this time around, with the group having raised just under $11 million so far during the 2024 election cycle.

In 2021, Lincoln Project co-founder John Weaver admitted to sending “inappropriate” sexually suggestive messages to a number of men, as first reported by Axios.

In 2022, after anti-Trump Republican Rep. Liz Cheney lost her seat, the group said the Republican Party had become an “authoritarian nationalist cult.”
