It is the opening of the scotch that turned out to be an obstacle in the quest for gukesh as a black. The Indian opted for a less popular variation and even if the position seemed level in the medium game that followed, Gukesh has never been really out of muddy waters.
Vachier-Lagrave used his chances to considerably weaken Gukesh custody on the queen side through bulk pawns, then the game suddenly ended suddenly while Gukesh realized that the weaknesses were unsuitable. It was in place in only 31 movements.
Praggnanandhaa had no chance because Deac was probably satisfied with a draw like White. The pieces were exchanged at regular intervals and the game was a little boring for the chess buffs which looked at a battle in its own right. Pragg could do little and attract 35 movements.
Round 4 results: Deac Bogdan Daniel (Rou, 2) drew with R Praggnanandhaa (Ind, 2.5); Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA, 2.5) beat D Gukesh (Ind, 1.5); Duda Jan Krzysztof (POL, 1.5) lost against levon Aronian (USA, 2); Firouzja Alireza (Fra, 2) drew with Wesley So (USA, 2); Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB, 1.5) drew with Fabiano Caruana (United States, 2.5).
