The world chess champion Domommonju Gukesh obtained a draw against Nodirbek Abdusattorov during the sixth round of the Tata Steel Chess 2025 tournament on Friday. Gukesh was in a losing position against the Uzbekistan Grand Master, but presented a brilliant resistance to save a draw in a competition that lasted more than six hours. The result leaves Abdusattorov and R Praggnanandhaa tied for first place with 4.5 points, with D Gukesh in second place with four points in the Masters category.
GUKESH and Abdusattorov shared a fierce rivalry with each other since their first meeting at the Olympiad of chess in 2022 in Chennai. Gukesh had lost against the 20 -year -old player at the time, but this time the Indian teenager did not give up.
Early advantage for Nordibek
Uzbekistan GM was an advantage against Gukesh before moving 20, so much so that the latter was forced to protect themselves from the danger. Gukesh lost his queen at the tower of her opponent in movement 37, and it was clear that Abdusattorov had the very advantage at this stage.
Gukesh made a mistake by moving his king in movement 45, because the engine showed that he should have moved his tower instead. Nodirbek had another four pawns after movement 46 compared to two pawns that of Gukesh, and even if the Indian was left to a pawn in motion 50, he always had the knight on the board.
In motion 52, it was almost certain that Gukesh was going to lose the plot. However, he received a rescue buoy in movement 59 when Nodirbek moved his tower to E8, which, according to the engine, was an error, and Gukesh quickly took advantage of it. The match finally ended after 66 moves with a triple rehearsal.
In other games, R Praggnanandhaa was held in a draw against Wei Yi, while Arigaisi and Fabiano Caruana also played a draw. Pentala Harikrishna also settled for a draw against Jorden Van Forest, while Leon Mendonca had the same result against Max Warmerdam.
In the Challengers section, Faustino Oro beat Divya Deshmukh while R Va Vaishali and Irina Bulmaga played a draw.
