Pep Guardiola is “realistic” and thinks that Manchester City cannot win the Champions League in its current form, but he has fully confident that they will improve in the coming days and create problems when they face Real Madrid Or Bayern Munich next month in the playoffs.
City needed a second half-time response of 1-0 to beat the Brugge 3-1 club Wednesday to avoid crashing before the stadiums with direct elimination for the first time since 2012.
Their reward could just be an execution stay against the defending champions or the former Bayern club Guardiola.
City was also a reduced force in the Premier League this season, where they are fourth – 12 points behind the Liverpool leaders.
But Guardiola hopes that they will be reinforced by the return of key players from injuries and new signatures Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis in the coming weeks.
“Right now. I am so realistic, “said Guardiola when asked if the 2023 champions could win the competition again. “Madrid is back in terms of results, Bayern has played an incredible season so far with (coach) Vinny (Kompany). If we have to play tomorrow, it will be difficult, but in two weeks we don’t know.
“We are going to prepare, be in good shape and try and see what’s going on.”
Despite their difficulties, City won six and pulled one of their last eight games.
“At least we get results,” added Guardiola. “We are fourth in the Premier League, not in the title race, no means, but we are still there.
“FA Cup we are there. Sometimes it is impossible today but tomorrow the state of mind, the vibrations change and I am sure that we will try to create problems for Madrid or Bayern.
City’s narrow escape played a central role in a last dramatic night for the first season of the new Swiss model format of the Champions League.
Guardiola said he could appreciate the change that the first stadiums of the competition attracted fans, even if it caused him much more tension.
And he thinks that other major clubs will be faced with similar difficulties in the future.
“As a spectator, how many things (still had to be decided) is pleasant. The problem is that we play more matches in October, November, December and in future important teams will experience what we have experienced this season.
“We were on the edge, 45 minutes from the exit. This is an incredible lesson for me, the club that nothing is (taken) for granted.
“Congress the team because they always have a pride and we will see how we arrive in two weeks.”
