Group Calls for Ted Cruz to Be Debarred for Trying to Cancel 2020 Election

A group formed in hopes of disbarring attorneys who worked on cases in which former President Donald J. Trump tried to overturn the 2020 election results filed a lawsuit with the Texas Bar on Wednesday against the Senator Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas, for his efforts to keep Mr. Trump in power.

The lawsuit against Mr. Cruz, filed by a group called Project 65, focuses on baseless claims by Mr. Cruz of widespread voter fraud in the weeks between Election Day in 2020 and Jan. 6, 2021, as well as his participation in proceedings. protest the results in Pennsylvania.

“Mr. Cruz played a leading role in the effort to annul the 2020 election. And while the same could be said of several other elected officials, Mr. Cruz’s involvement was demonstrably different,” says the complaint, claiming that Mr. Cruz went beyond simply working within the confines of Congress.

“He has elected to take on the role of attorney and has agreed to represent Mr. Trump and the Republicans of Pennsylvania in litigation before the Supreme Court of the United States,” the lawsuit reads, citing his role in the case. two cases, neither of which was successful. “In doing so, Mr. Cruz went beyond his position as a United States Senator and sought to use more than his Twitter account and media appearances to support Mr. Trump’s anti-democratic mission.

Elsewhere, according to the complaint, Mr. Cruz continued to make statements he knew to be false, about the election and the partisanship of Pennsylvania state courts.

“Mr. Cruz knew that the allegations he was echoing had already been reviewed and dismissed by the courts,” the complaint states. “And he knew that the allegations of voter fraud or election theft were false.”

A spokesperson for Mr. Cruz dismissed Project 65 as “a far-left money smear machine run by a who’s who of shameless Democratic hacks. It is not a credible organization and their complaint will not be worth the paper it is printed on.

Project 65 advisers include Hillary Clinton ally David Brock and Paul Rosenzweig, a conservative and former Republican who worked on Ken Starr’s special prosecution team investigating the Clintons. Project 65 was formed to hold accountable lawyers involved in a series of lawsuits aimed at undermining President Biden’s 2020 victory.

Its targets have included a range of lawyers who worked on post-election lawsuits in 2020. Mr. Cruz is the first senator the group has targeted in its campaign, which is still in its early stages.

The complaint cited the suspension of the attorney’s license of Rudolph W. Giuliani, the former mayor of New York and one of Mr. Trump’s lawyers, in New York, as a precedent for what could happen to Mr. .Cruz.

In an interview, Mr. Rosenzweig said the purpose of the complaint was to clarify that the need for “self-regulation for misrepresentation is a reality” and that “if you break these rules, you will suffer at least the public consequences of to be called for your misconduct.

Mr Rosenzweig said the aim was not to punish people for representing clients, no matter how many people might disagree with their opinions, but rather that it was “to find out if a lawyer” could “experience criminal conduct”.
