Greene called a poorly built butch body a ‘bleached blonde’ during a House shouting match where ‘drinking was involved’

The drinking allegedly took place in a committee room where a hearing degenerated into insults of “fake eyelashes” and “bleached blonde butch body” being hurled across the chamber by Republican and Democratic lawmakers on Thursday.

Republicans and Democrats said Policy that some members had been drinking that evening but no names were made public.

At a hearing to decide whether U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland could be held in contempt of Congress, Georgia Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene launched the first salvo against Democrat Jasmine Crockett’s “false eyelashes.”

Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez rebuked Ms Greene’s “disgusting” and “unacceptable” remarks about Ms Crockett.

“How dare you attack another person’s physical appearance? » said Ms. Ocasio-Cortez.

The Republican taunted her, asking if her feelings had been hurt.

“Oh girl, oh baby, don’t even play,” Ms. Ocasio-Cortez retorted, leading her counterpart to add mockingly: “Oh really, baby?”

Jamie Raskin, the committee’s top Democrat, also chastised her. “It’s even beneath you, Mrs. Greene,” he said.

The exchanges continued, with Ms. Greene agreeing to strike her comments from the record. However, she did not agree to apologize to Ms. Crockett, which caused even more anger in the Democratic camp.

When asked, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez refused to enter into a debate with Ms. Greene, resulting in the Republican’s final damning remark: “Yes, you don’t have enough intelligence.” »

Mr. Comer said Ms. Greene’s insult did not ultimately violate House rules, leaving Ms. Crockett scratching her head over the decision.

“If anyone on this committee starts talking about someone’s bleached blond, poorly built body, that wouldn’t engage in personalities, would it?” she asked the president.

His question sparked confusion on Mr. Comer’s part. “Um, what now?” He asked.

That prompted Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna to call for Crockett’s remarks to be struck from the record, prompting a sharp response from Democrats.

“I’m trying to get clarification,” Ms. Crockett said. “Don’t tell me to calm down, because you’re talking about the noise and you can’t stand it, because if I come talking about her, you’ll all have a problem.”

The hearing was the latest chapter in House Republicans’ failed attempts to impeach Mr. Biden since they voted to open an impeachment inquiry in December.

House Speaker Mike Johnson chastised members after the hearing.

“When we disagree – even vehemently – we must treat each other with dignity and respect,” he said. “I think it’s an important principle.”

Last week, Ms Greene led an unsuccessful attempt to impeach Mr Johnson, with an overwhelming number of Democrats joining almost all Republicans to save him.
