ASHWAUBENON, Wisconsin – Green Bay Police have confirmed that a suspect is in custody after reports of an active shooter situation on Saturday night in the area of Oneida Casino and the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center.
Several law enforcement agencies responded around 7:30 p.m.
Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul tweeted that the situation was under control and there was “no longer a threat to the community.”
Kaul wrote that the State Department of Justice and the Brown County Sheriff’s Office would be the only sources of information about the shootings. “All others have not been confirmed,” his tweet said.
Bobbi Webster, director of public relations for Oneida Nation, said she understood someone had been shot, but she wasn’t sure how many and couldn’t immediately provide more details.
The Oneida Nation subsequently issued a statement asking members of the public to “please keep our community in your prayers”, but provided no further details of the shootings.
Webster said the Oneida Nation is in the process of shutting down all of its casinos until further notice. Traffic was also diverted around the nearby Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport.
Max Westphal of Brownsville said he was playing blackjack with a group of friends when an announcement came over the loudspeaker that people should evacuate.
At first he said they thought it was something minor. However, once outside, they heard the situation escalate.
“All of a sudden, a huge flurry of gunfire. Between 10 and 30 shots,” Westphal said. “All you could smell outside was gunpowder.”
They ran away from the scene, he said.
Taylor Schroeder was at the bingo hall in a separate building and did not hear any shots being fired, but said players were locked out around 8 p.m. and received no information on what was happening. was happening.
They continued to play bingo and received occasional “vague” updates until about 45 minutes later, when they were forced to leave immediately.
Outside, fire engines, ambulances and police vehicles were “everywhere”.
“I’m just happy that we were able to evacuate so efficiently and quickly,” said Shroeder.
Oneida Casino is located at 2020 Airport Drive and is operated by the Oneida Nation.
