The parents of PGA golfer Grayson Murray revealed Sunday that Murray’s death Saturday morning was a suicide.

“We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone,” the Murray family wrote in a statement. “It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but also to the world. It’s a nightmare.

“We would like to thank the PGA TOUR and the entire golf world for their outpouring of support. Life hasn’t always been easy for Grayson, and even though he took his own life, we know he is now at peace.

Murray died Saturday at the age of 30, a day after withdrawing from the second round of the Charles Schwab Challenge at the Colonial in Fort Worth, Texas. The PGA previously cited illness as the reason for Murray’s withdrawal.

“We have so many unanswered questions,” the family wrote. ” But one. …Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes. By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, his entire extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and – it seems – by many of you reading this. He was loved and will be missed.

“Please respect our privacy as we work through this incredible tragedy, and honor Grayson by being kind to each other. If this becomes his legacy, we couldn’t ask for anything else.
