Leverkusen were crowned German champions for the first time in their history on Sunday, with Xhaka scoring the second goal in a 5-0 win over Werder Bremen.

The former Arsenal midfielder joined Leverkusen in the summer and has been a key part of Xabi Alonso’s side.

The 31-year-old said becoming German champion for the first time was a moment he dreamed of, but added that his team is now only focused on winning more trophies.

“It’s difficult to find the right words (to sum up your emotions),” Xhaka said. “Coming back after my first season in the league is incredible.

“We had a great season, a good game, not in the first half but in the second half, we did well, and now we are enjoying it.

“When you play ball at a young age, you dream of moments like this. It was hard work day in and day out, with everyone who was part of this club.

“In my 14-year football career, it’s special for me, but even more special for this club. Now we want more, and take the others too.

Former Southampton defender Nathan Tella also joined Leverkusen in the summer and said he was happy with his progress after having to be patient for his first-team opportunities.

“I’m surrounded by extremely talented players and coaches, and winning in the first season is incredible,” Tella said.

“Patience has been everything. I was frustrated the first half of the year because I hadn’t played. But now I have become more involved and have had moments where I can be happy.

“Everyone has been so important this season. Everyone played a role. We’re also still undefeated, which is another thing we want to check off.
