For the music industry, the Grammy Awards are not only one night. They are not even a weekend. Usually, the annual celebration includes an entire week of pre-grammy festivals, brunch, windows and any event that facilitates schmozing in a parking lot in a dark suit and a pair of van.
Not this year. Although the Grammys have decided to continue the show as expected, despite the still fresh impact of forest fires which devastated large parts of Los Angeles, most of the games were canceled, telegraphing the potential of a more solemn gathering .
The Registration Academy has retained its two main pre-grammy events on the calendar: The Musicares Tribute Concert, benefiting a charitable organization in Grammy which helps musicians in need, and the annual gala of Clive Davis previously at the Beverly Hilton, where the stars, the elbow lighting at the living room tables, take performance and long long speeches.
At the two events, the atmosphere was … normal. Sort of. Music professionals are running, embraced, nibbled on the outdoors. Friday, during the Musicares event, a tribute to the Grateful Dead with Norah Jones, Wynonna Judd, Noah Kahan, John Mayer – a longtime member of Dead & Company – and many others, people dressed like multicolored bears emblematic of Dead danced through the pavilion through the crowd, while participants took selfies, cocktails in hand.
But fundraising for the relief of fires has become the underlying motivation behind events, giving them a sense of objective, or at least justification. In a speech, Bob Weir, Grateful Dead’s guitarist, struck the notes that seemed to echo each official communication of the weekend: perseverance and resilience for Los Angeles, with the help of the entertainment industry.
“What we have here in Socal these days is a reconstruction that will take time and efforts, and a huge amount of teamwork,” said Weir. “I guess it will take a few years, but Socal will be back, stronger and brighter.”
The dark but festive tone had been set Thursday with Fireaid, a concert of services not affiliated with the Grammys which featured Billie Eilish, Green Day, Olivia Rodrigo, Joni Mitchell, the surviving members of Nirvana and many others – the programming was So large, he took over two arenas, Intuit Dome and Kia Forum.
“As far as I’m concerned,” Anderson. Paak at Fireaid’s crowd at the Forum, “this is one of the biggest nights in the history of Los Angeles.”
He continued on Saturday evening at the Davis Gala, which he has held since 1976, when Barry Manilow’s “Mandy” was the first blow to Arista, the new label founded by Davis. At 92, the long -standing executive and producer remains a symbol of continuity for industry.
As always, the event was filled with celebrities and daring names, notably Nancy Pelosi, Jennifer Lopez, Alicia Keys, Berry Gordy de Motown and the personality of CBS Gayle King; At a table, “Weird Al” Yankovic rubbed his shoulders with Ezra Koenig from Vampire Weekend.
The performance of the night began with a rock supergroup led by Chris and Rich Robinson of The Black Crowes – with Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Robert Trujillo de Metallica and the producer Andrew Watt – playing LED Zeppelin and the covers of Black Sabbath. He continued with Post Malone, a tribute to Quincy Jones by Michael Bublé, rapper Doechii and, after his appearance in Fireaid, Mitchell, seated on a throne, singing his song “Both Sides Now” and the Gershwin “Summertime” standard ” .
The QR codes flashed on the screens of the ballroom, with messages urging participants to give money to recovery efforts.
“The registration academy and I decided to transform us this evening, as well as the television of the Grammy Awards of tomorrow, in fundraising for Musicares,” said Davis in a speech. He added: “We must recognize the pain, loss and devastation of forest fires that hit Los Angeles earlier this month.”
