Govt fires CRPF DIG Khajan Singh over sexual misconduct allegations

The Union government has dismissed a CRPF DIG over allegations of sexual misconduct leveled against him by some women members of the country’s largest paramilitary force, officials said on Saturday (June 1).

A ‘removal’ order from the office of the President of India was issued on May 30 against Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and former sports officer of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Khajan Singh. The revocation is effective from May 31, the order specifies.

The final dismissal order came after the CRPF served the officer with two show cause notices, approved by the Home Ministry and the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), over the last month.

Singh, who was posted in Navi Mumbai in the force’s western sector, had denied the allegations of sexual harassment and claimed they were “absolutely false” and meant to spoil his “image”.

The show cause notices were issued against the officer after the Home Ministry accepted the UPSC’s recommendations made after a CRPF probe found him ‘guilty’ of the sexual harassment charges leveled against him a few years ago.

The CRPF headquarters had earlier accepted the inquiry report prepared by an internal committee and forwarded it to the UPSC and the Home Ministry for appropriate disciplinary action. The officer faced charges in two cases.

Singh served as the sports director of the CRPF and won a silver medal at the 1986 Seoul Asian Games in the 200 meter butterfly event, which was India’s first medal in swimming at the tournament since its 1951 edition.

The CRPF, a force of around 3.25 lakh personnel, first inducted women into the combat ranks in 1986. It currently has six all-female battalions with an overall strength of around 8,000 men .
