Government admits Covid app wrongly ordered people to quarantine

The Canadian government has admitted that some travelers were wrongly told to self-quarantine upon arrival in Canada due to issues in the Trudeau government’s ArriveCAN app.

The federal government has admitted that the app told some travelers to self-quarantine when they weren’t actually required to because of a glitch in the ArriveCAN app, a mobile phone app that must be used when entering Canada to confirm vaccination against the Wuhan virus.

Don and Karin Bennett said they received an email from the app after returning from a trip to the United States telling them they needed to self-quarantine, despite both being fully vaccinated.

“There’s the threatening language of $5,000 fines, plus the potential dispatch of the police to your house,” Mr Bennett told Canadian broadcaster CBC.

Audrey Champoux, press secretary to Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino, later admitted that the ArrivaCAN app had suffered a “technical glitch” and that the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) had identified the problem and was working on a solution.

Many travel and tourism industry experts have questioned the effectiveness of the ArrivaCAN app, such as the President and CEO of the Tourism Industry Association of Canada, Beth Potter, who s wondered if the app was really necessary.

“Anything that complicates the travel process, travel right now has a negative impact on people returning to travel again,” Potter said.

Similar criticism from those in the travel industry came before Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government suspended a travel ban on unvaccinated people last month. During the ban, unvaccinated people were not allowed to board planes for domestic or international flights and were not allowed to travel by train between provinces or internationally.

Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc, however, warned that the suspension may only be temporary depending on the coronavirus situation in Canada.
