GOP legislators have reprimanded Haverford President for not having discussed the discipline

By Collin Binkley, educational writer AP

Washington (AP) – The president of the Haverford College was reprimanded by republican legislators during a Congress hearing on campus anti -Semitism on Wednesday, some suggesting that the school should lose federal funding because of its refusal to discuss the discipline of students in the wake of pro -Palestinian demonstrations.

Wendy Raymond appeared alongside two other college presidents in Capitol Hill, but was distinguished as the only one who does not detail the punishment for students and teachers accused of anti-Jewish bias. Questioned on several occasions, Raymond said that his institution did not advertise the results of the disciplinary processes.

“I suppose that it is your right of the first amendment to be elusive, but it is also our right to decide that these institutions do not deserve taxpayers’ money,” said Republican representative Bob Onder du Missouri.

Jeffrey Armstrong by California Polytechnic State University and Robert Manuel de Depaul at the University of Depaul also appeared before the Education and the Workerste’s Workmanship of California Polytechnic State University. He was the last of a series of audiences examining the university presidents on their responses to the allegations of anti-Jewish biases following the attacks of October 7 in Hamas, attacks against Israel and a wave of demonstrations that swept nation campuses. Hamas has been appointed as a terrorist organization by the United States, Canada and the European Union.

Unlike other hearings that presented managers from Harvard, Columbia and other elite institutions – with stumbling that then contributed to their resignations – this was intentionally focused on less known schools. The Republicans sought to look beyond the Ivy League to underline the omnipresence of anti-Semitism on American campuses.

The committee leaders aimed to choose a diverse mix of colleges. Haverford is a small school of liberal arts outside Philadelphia, founded by Quakers. DEPAUL is a Catholic university with an urban campus in Chicago. Cal Poly is a campus of 22,000 students in San Luis Obispo.

For more than three hours, the Republicans have toasted the presidents for anti-Jewish harassment reports on their campuses, ranging from publications on social networks to the physical attack of two Jewish students in Depaul. The Democrats denounced the audience, calling it the political theater which does not do much to fight against discrimination.

The trio of presidents mainly took a deferential tone, recognizing missteps while highlighting the work to make students more security. Raymond and Manuel apologized for gaps, while Armstrong said that “we have to do better”, keep people responsible for prejudices.

But while the presidents of Cal Poly and Depaul shared information on disciplinary measures against anti -Semitism, Raymond refused.

“We are not talking about these figures publicly,” she said when he supported the issue. She recognized that measures had taken but refused to go further.

He attracted a burning reprimand from representative Elise Stefanik, RN.Y., known for orchestrated ardent exchanges with former presidents of Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania who contributed to their resignations last year.

“Respectfully, president of Haverford, many people have been sitting in this position which are no longer in their position as presidents of universities for their inability to answer simple questions,” said Stefanik.

Stefanik questioned Raymond about the publication of a teacher’s social media describing Hamas’ attacks as “imprisoned people free from their channels”. Raymond called him a repugnant but refused to discuss individual cases.

The president of Depaul was exposed to a meticulous examination on his management of a pro-Palestinian camp. The demonstrators resumed a quad on the campus at the University of Chicago for 17 days, causing $ 180,000 in material damage, according to the school. Police cleared the camp and said they found knives, a pellet pistol and other weapons.

“My question is, if there is another camp, do you remove it the next day?” asked the representative Mary Miller, R-ill.

“Yes,” said Manuel.

Other Republicans have approved the idea of funding reductions for schools that refuse to disclose sanctions, saying that Congress should explore the issue. Representative Ryan Mackenzie de Pennsylvania said it should be a reference to receive funding.

The Republicans began the series of audiences at the end of 2023 and systematically called the education leaders at Capitol Hill to testify. Those called include the heads of Harvard, Columbia, Penn, Northwestern University and the University of California in Los Angeles.

The Trump administration has been separately from the billions of dollars in colleges targeted by a federal working group on anti -Semitism. Those who are targeted include Columbia, Penn and Harvard, who continues to restore $ 2.2 billion in subsidies. The education department doubled last week, saying that Harvard was no longer eligible for new grants.
