Google’s Project Starline video conferencing technology comes to offices

Google is partnering with HP to offer its Starline project to businesses. The company began demoing this service in 2021 and the first iteration involved a 3D video chat booth with a projection of the person you’re talking to. We came away noticing how realistic everything seemed and how the other person seemed to be in the room with you.

However, this technology is not quite the same as what we tried a few years ago. Since then, Google has significantly streamlined and simplified the system. There is no longer a video chat booth, as the whole thing has been moved to a system with a large TV and cameras. This reduces, but makes implementation much easier.

To this end, Google and HP will integrate Project Starline with popular video conferencing applications such as Google Meet and Zoom. There is no information on how much it will cost for businesses to sign up to use this technology, nor any details regarding initial setup. Google will announce later this year that actual commercialization will begin in 2025.

HP calls this an “immersive collaboration experience” and it certainly seems like a better telepresence solution than a small smartphone screen. In the end, it’s just a big show. Project Starline’s updated technology does not include anything resembling holographic projection.
