- Google said it would start testing a new “AI mode” integrated into its search page.
- The AI mode aims to give users a set of “wider and more diverse” results than the IA previews.
- It still brings AI closer to the basic Google research experience.
Google said he was planning to test a new “AI mode” for research that would provide an entire page of results generated by artificial intelligence in response to user requests.
The new feature, which should first be available for the first testers, would place an “AI mode” tab at the top of the Google search page. Once clicked, the user would be transported on a new page which responds to the request with a set of “wider and more diverse” results fed by AI.
Google already offers IA previews, which try to respond to certain requests with a direct response at the top of the page. The AI mode goes further by generating an entire page of results fueled by a personalized version of the Gemini 2.0 model which uses multimodal reasoning and AI.
In an example provided by Google, a user can search for information on sleep trackers and note that AI mode creates a comparison table that compares the different options available.
Google said it would start to invite Google One Ai Premium subscribers to the United States to test the new AI mode via research laboratories, adding that it was already available for a small number of “trust testers”. It did not provide a calendar for a wider deployment.
An overview of the future of research
AI mode arrives as Google breathes artificial intelligence into all its main products, while trying not to disturb its main milk cow, which is research. Chatgpt and other AI chatbots have been considered an existential threat to Google’s basic research activities, although the data suggest that they do not yet make a bump.
The new AI mode, although it is still in development, offers an overview of an entirely new approach to the way Google’s search engine could possibly work.
“With this new mode, people can ask nuanced questions that could have already done several research – such as exploring a new concept to compare the options and beyond – and obtain a complete response fueled by AI,” said Google on Wednesday in an explanator that accompanies it.

AI mode also looks like a bridge between conventional research and its Gemini chatbot, which can currently only be accessible via its own website or an application. The AI mode would try to respond directly to requests where it can, but also display links to information sources and said Google, press purchase data for millions of products.
But like the Gemini chatbot, AI mode could also allow users to ask follow -up questions. It is also multimodal, allowing users to request queries using text, voice or images.
Google said IA mode would only work when it has great confidence in the results. In cases he does not do, he would simply spit a list of search results. Certain features, such as comparison tables, would not be available in IA mode either, but a spokesperson said that the company planned to deploy them over time.
Google also said on Wednesday that it launched its Gemini 2.0 model for AI previews, which, according to him, would improve the results for more complicated research, including coding, advanced mathematics and multimodal requests.
