Google has agreed to settle a case because it deals with government efforts to break its activities.
Texas prosecutor General Ken Paxton said in a statement on Friday that the search engines had agreed to pay $ 1.375 billion to the state of Texas to settle two prosecution accusing Google of raping the laws on confidentiality and data security.
“In 2022, the Attorney General Paxton continued Google for the monitoring and collection of private user data on geolocation, incognito research and biometric data,” the press release said. “After years of aggressive disputes, the Attorney General Paxton has agreed to settle claims for data privilege of Texas against Google for an amount that far exceeds complaints from any other state for similar violations.”
The regulations do not mean that Google admitted a fault. A Google spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comments.
In 2024, Meta set a similar legal action filed by Paxton which accused the company of illegally collecting the personal biometric data of people. Meta agreed to pay $ 1.4 billion to the state.
For the mother company of Google, alphabet, the regulation is only one of the many legal headaches with which the technology giant has had to face in recent years.
Last August, Google lost a historic antitrust case which determined that it had a monopoly on the search engine sector. Society is now in the midst of a legal battle with the Ministry of Justice to understand what to do in the light of the decision. The DoJ wants the company to deposit its Chrome web browser.
During the process of determining the legal remedies, an Apple leader testified on Wednesday that the volume of research on the Apple Safari browser, which has Google research as a default engine, dropped for the first time in more than 20 years in part because of the AI, which means that the alphabet stock changed more than 8% on Wednesday.
Google said in response that the company continues to “improve research with new features” as global research requests have increased.
In a distinct antitrust case, a federal judge of the Oriental District of Virginia judged that Google has an illegal monopoly on advertising technology.
The company said it was planning to appeal the decision.
