Google replaces Chromecast with TV Streamer

Google has unveiled its latest living room product, the . It replaces the Chromecast and is a standalone set-top box, unlike the dongles we’re used to. The little wedge-shaped gadget supports all the expected features, including HDR, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and spatial audio. But Google is also making a big deal about the device’s smart home credentials, with support for Matter and Thread. You’ll also get a contextual Google Home panel, letting you fine-tune your smart home from the comfort of your TV.

Of course, you might wonder why Google needs to push this product given the number of smart TVs out there. Or the ubiquity of other platforms that do much the same job, from Roku to most streaming-capable cable boxes. On the one hand, Google wants to keep a foot on the biggest screen in your home, and on the other, it’s a good way to showcase the search giant’s AI prowess, offering personalized recommendations for things to watch. Plus, if you’re looking for something a little more Made By Google, you can pick it up for $100 when it launches in September.

As for the Chromecast, we opted for the cheap little streaming stick that could do it.
