Google Pixel 9 Ranks #1 in DxOMark’s ‘Premium’ Phone Camera Rankings

The results of the Google Pixel 9 camera and display tests by DxOMark are out. In terms of camera, the Android phone has achieved impressive scores for its category. It has achieved a total score of 154 points, beating the Pixel 8 by 6 points. With this, the affordable smartphone from Google’s latest lineup has secured the top spot in DxOMark’s “Premium” ranking.

For reference, French benchmarking firm DxOMark categorizes phones between $600 and $800 as “Premium,” and the Pixel 9 starts at $799 (get a free $100 gift card when you pre-order). When comparing the phone to all the smartphones the company has tested, it comes in at #7. That essentially makes the device comparable to the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max in the “Overall” ranking.

DxOMark notes that the Google Pixel 9 can deliver vibrant colors and preserve skin tones in images. The camera setup also captures images with accurate exposure and has a wide dynamic range. When it comes to videos, the Android phone is said to deliver stable footage with rich colors and high details in different conditions.

However, due to the lack of a dedicated telephoto lens, it doesn’t excel in terms of zoomed-in shots. DxOMark recommends the Pixel 9 for those who often take portrait and group photos and videos. It’s also great for low-light conditions. Another thing to note: the phone’s overall camera score puts it above that of the Pixel 8 Pro. So this is a solid generational upgrade, at least according to DxOMark.

When it comes to display scores, the most affordable phone in the latest Pixel series does well in DxOMark’s tests. It scored an overall score of 156. For comparison, the current top-ranked phone on the “Overall” list, the Pixel 9 Pro XL, scored 158. So it’s only slightly behind.

Still, that display score puts the Pixel 9 at the top of the “Premium” list, while it earned third place in the “Overall” ranking. You can learn more by checking out the sub-scores below, or by reading the results of the in-depth camera and display tests on the DxOMark website.
