Google Maps adds live activities for more iPhone users

Live Activities is a really cool, yet underutilized, feature of iOS. Google Maps first announced that the app would support Live Activities in 2023, but it still hasn’t happened. However, after some testing was launched earlier this year, we’re seeing more and more users reporting that the feature is live.

In April, we spotted some limited and intermittent tests of live activities working for Google Maps users. And since July, it seems like Google is opening the floodgates just a bit more.

We’ve seen a few reports in the last couple of weeks that live activities are appearing for more Maps users. This is in contrast to only a few reports in the previous 2-3 months.

So clearly Google is testing this more widely, but it’s not available to all users yet.

Live activities on Google Maps are used for “at-a-glance directions,” showing your ETA and upcoming directions right on the lock screen or by tapping the dynamic island. This data is available via a notification on Android devices, but it’s not accessible on iPhone without opening the app again.

It’s not yet clear when Google Maps will fully roll out support for live activities on iPhone, but very slowly, that moment seems to be approaching.

Are you seeing live activity on Maps on your iPhone? Let us know in the comments.
