Google says that it will engage up to $ 150 million to the Warby Parker consumer glasses company to jointly develop smart glasses fueled by AI based on Android XR, companies announced on Tuesday during Google I / O 2025.
Google has already engaged $ 75 million for the development and marketing costs of Warby Parker products, companies said in a press release. Google says it will invest an additional $ 75 million, taking equity in Warby Parker, if the glasses manufacturer reaches certain milestones.
At Google I / O 2025, Google has also announced partnerships with several companies to develop smart glasses with Gemini AI and AR capacities, notably Samsung and Gentle Monster.
Google seems to withdraw a page from the Meta smart glasses strategy. Meta has managed to associate and invest in the Ray-Ban-Banorluxottica rays manufacturer to develop his smart glasses. Part of the reason behind the success of Ray-Ban Meta is that intelligent glasses have an attractive and familiar design and that they are sold in Ray-Ban stores. It seems likely that Google will have a similar relationship with Warby Parker, taking advantage of the popular framework designs of the Society of Glasses and perhaps its retail stores.
In the press release, Warby Parker and Google said they intended to launch a series of products over time. Their first line of glasses will be launched “after 2025” and will incorporate a multimodal AI with prescription glasses and without prescription.
