In addition to a new home page and other UI changes, Google Drive on Android is rolling out a major overhaul of the document scanner interface with more features.
You launch it from the dedicated FAB camera that appears above the rectangular one for “New”, which still retains “Scan” as before. Instead of getting the default camera app, you get a custom viewfinder that has “Google Drive” branding at the top and simplified controls. Notably, an “Auto Capture” mode, alongside “Manual”, will take the photo for you when everything is aligned.
This launches a new “Preview” interface with a sort of modern Material You bottom bar. Available tools include:
- Crop & Rotate: Auto crop, No crop, Rotate
- Filtered: None, Auto, Color, Grayscale
- To resume
- DELETE
You can also add additional pages, while “Done” in the upper right corner takes you to the “Save to Drive” UI to title and choose a folder.
Redesign
We’re seeing this scanner overhaul roll out today with Google Drive version 2.23.457.1 for Android. Other changes in this version include the new home feed with a top “Suggested” tab that offers a simple list view, while “Activity” replaces notifications. “Starred” replaces the old Workspaces tab, which has been moved to the navigation drawer for enterprise accounts, in the second position.
Finally, Files uses cards for each item in the grid view. The file name has been moved to the top instead of below the preview previously.
