Golden Globes audiences remain stable with 10 million viewers

NEW YORK — An average of 10.1 million viewers watched the 82nd Golden Globes on CBS and Paramount+, Dick Clark Productions announced Monday, roughly matching last year’s audience.

CBS reported viewership figures from VideoAmp rather than those from the industry’s standard audience measurement service, Nielsen. Paramount Global, owner of CBS, is in a contractual dispute with Nielsen.

At a time when most traditional linear broadcasts are in decline, maintaining the viewership of last year’s Globes would certainly be a success for the Nikki Glaser-hosted show. Last year’s broadcast, the Globes premiere on CBS, attracted 9.4 million viewers, according to Nielsen.

Before the pandemic, however, the Globes typically approached 20 million viewers. In 2020, 18.4 million people watched the Globes.

But just two years ago, the Globes were on the verge of extinction. After the Los Angeles Times reported that the HFPA had no Black members, Hollywood boycotted the organization and the 2022 Globes were halted. NBC aired the 2023 edition, then dropped the awards show.

The 2024 Globes also had its problems, with many calling the Jo Koy-hosted ceremony a trainwreck. But ratings rebounded and CBS signed on for five more years. Following the scandals, the awards were acquired by Penske Media-owned Eldridge Industries and Dick Clark Productions and turned into a for-profit company.

Sunday’s ceremony, which took place at the same time as NBC’s broadcast of the Minnesota Viking-Detroit Lions game, drew much better reviews for Glaser. The evening’s top prizes went to the Netflix musical “Emilia Perez” and the A24 post-war epic “The Brutalist.” On the television side, FX’s “Shōgun” and Max’s “Hacks” came away victorious.
