Glebe, Sydney: Terrifying moment Uber Eats driver allegedly attacked by gang of teenage thugs

A gang of young thugs are terrifying residents with fears of escalating violence after an alleged unprovoked attack on a delivery driver.

The incident on Glebe Point Road in Glebe, western Sydney, around 1am on April 15, was filmed by a local and shared with 2GB’s Ben Fordham.

It shows the delivery driver wearing a high-visibility jacket surrounded by thugs who rushed at him and allegedly tried to attack him.

Several objects were allegedly thrown at the driver before he was forced to leave on foot, pursued by the thugs.

Residents said the alleged incident was just the latest in a series of incidents that have recently occurred in the suburb.

Tim, a resident who has lived in the area for five years, told Fordham that the incidents were getting progressively worse.

“They sat there most of the night, drinking vodka. I found the remains of a bottle of Smirnoff vodka the next day,” he said.

“You have a delivery driver who is just doing his job, they were (allegedly) attacked by him.”

The footage shows a gang of teenagers on bikes, described by Tim as “reinforcements” who were allegedly called by the others to join the attack.

A number of incidents are believed to have occurred near a local school and a late-night convenience store.

“I wouldn’t go out at night unless I absolutely had to,” Tim added.

Police were called to the scene, but the group had left before they arrived.

NSW Police Chief Inspector Grant Watson insisted police “want everyone to feel safe”.

“New South Wales Police officers are doing everything they can to arrest those responsible, but we need everyone to do their part,” he said in a statement.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested last Wednesday in connection with the incident and charged with affray and drive a vehicle taken without the owner’s consent.

He was granted conditional release and is expected to appear in court on May 29.
