Girl dies from injuries in suspected drunk driving crash

CUPERTINO – An 11-year-old girl died last week from injuries she suffered in a suspected drunken crash late last month in Cupertino, South Bay authorities confirmed Monday.

Three other children – aged 8, 7 and 4 – were also injured in the collision. They were treated and released from area hospitals, said Brooks Jarosz, a spokesman for the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.

The 11-year-old girl was pronounced dead shortly after 5 p.m. on May 1, according to Jarosz. The county medical examiner and coroner’s office will release his identity once it is confirmed and his next of kin have been notified.

The crash happened around 6:15 p.m. on April 27 near Foothill and Stevens Creek boulevards.

The driver of a silver Mazda pickup truck collided with another vehicle and hit a utility pole. The four children, who were on the sidewalk at the time, were also hit.

The driver – identified as a 38-year-old Cupertino man – was arrested and booked into the county jail on charges of driving under the influence of drugs causing serious bodily injury.

The sheriff’s office is awaiting the suspect’s toxicology report, according to Jarosz.

“Once the investigation is complete, the information will be sent to the district attorney’s office for review,” Jarosz said.
