Giants unveil retro uniforms honoring their debut

In honor of their 100th NFL season, the New York Giants introduce retro “Century Red” uniforms.

A statement from the team indicates that the uniforms could be worn twice during 2024, although no indication was given as to which games those might be.

The Giants’ statement explains the inspiration for the uniform this way:

The uniform harkens back to the franchise’s early days and includes beige pants; red socks with blue and white stripes from the team’s inaugural season in 1925; red jerseys accented with blue from 1933, when the Giants played in the NFL’s first-ever championship game; and an iconic winged helmet honoring the 1938 champions as the Giants became the cornerstone of the league’s founding. All 2024 team jerseys will feature the team’s “100 Seasons” crest.

The roots of the red jersey date back to 1933, in which the Giants faced the Chicago Bears in the first NFL championship game. The tan pants were worn during the 1925 season, the Giants’ first in the NFL. The winged helmet was worn by the Giants from 1937 to 1947. The uniform patch is in the shape of the Polo Grounds, the team’s first home in 1925.

“I feel like it’s raw and vintage,” linebacker Bobby Okereke said after seeing (and trying on) the uniform for the first time. “It’s a throwback to the 1920s and 1930s, when they were getting grimy. It’s a tribute to all the guys who played before. They paved the way for us to play this great game.”

Awful. The Giants are “Big Blue,” not “Big Red.”

Meh. It doesn’t matter what they wear as long as they win games.
