Leave it to The New York Times to have an addictive yet educational word game to solve! Since “Connections” is one of the most popular games in the publication, the answer today, January 5, 2025, was difficult to resolve.
Luckily, we have the clues and the final answer to today’s riddle.
“Connections” begins with a set of 16 words in a grid, and players must separate the words into four related groups. The difficulty of each category is indicated by the colors yellow, green, blue and purple. Yellow is the easiest, while purple is considered the most difficult.
Once a player has selected all four words from each group, they click “submit”, which should become the color of the category if correct.

“Connections” editor Wyna Liu knows the frustration of players when they cannot resolve a game. By speaking with Slate in July 2024, Liu described the development process for each game.
“The process is this: I have a notebook in which I write down category ideas. And when I sit down to create paintings, I take one of these ideas, I take these words, and then I start to derive from them,” Liu said. “And then the boards will be built from that, and sometimes it goes in surprising directions. I feel like it’s kind of one of the most joyful things about making games. I don’t know what the categories will be. I start with like a seed. And then I just think, “Oh, what does that word do?” “, and then maybe a dozen categories of possibilities and then you kind of see if any of those words clash with each other, and the brain builds up from that.”
