German investigators said on Wednesday that three Ukrainian men had been arrested for suspicion of having acted as “agents” for “sabotage” on behalf of Russia.
The officials said that the three men, all Ukrainian nationals, were ready to commit criminal fire acts and planned to send packages containing explosive devices, and had transmitted it to individuals “who would act on behalf of the Russian state authorities”.
The three, all Ukrainian nationals, are suspected of also planning criminal fire attacks.
What do we know about sabotage plans?
The suspects intended to target the right transport to Ukraine, which “would ignite during transport,” said federal prosecutors.
Two of the men were arrested this weekend in the cities of Cologne and Konstanz. Another was arrested on Tuesday in Switzerland.
According to reports in Germany Spiegel News Magazine, the three had started to carry out tests for a possible attack by sending parcels with GPS trackers to Ukrainian addresses.
Germany is wary of Russian plots
German intelligence services believe that individuals working in the name of Russia hire people to carry out spying and hoof operations across the country.
The authorities warned against a growing threat of Russian sabotage acts since the large -scale invasion of Ukraine by Moscow in February 2022.
The authorities said one of the arrested men discussed sabotage operations on industrial sites and military infrastructure targeted on German soil in order to undermine German aid in Ukraine.
Thomas Haldenwang, head of the national intelligence agency in Germany, told a parliamentary committee in October 2024 that Russian sabotage was suspected of being the cause of an air freight package that caught fire on the Tarmac before being transported on a DHL plane in Leipzig.
