The comments occurred after the American vice-president JD Vance met on Friday with the AFD candidate, candidate Alice Weidel, and following the approval by Elon Musk of the German political party of the far right Last month.
In an apparent change, Merz also expressed skepticism with regard to a possible coalition with the free Democratic Party in a tax, or FDP, which is currently fighting to reach the five percent threshold necessary to win seats in the Bundestag.
“I have great doubts about the FDP,” said Merz during the televised debate, which took place before the February 23 elections.
Merz has not developed his “great doubts” about a coalition with the FDP, but one of the reasons could be the reluctance of the liberals to soften the strict expenditure rules of Germany. During the weekend, Merz again expressed its opening to examine various financing options to cover an increase in German defense expenses, suggesting that it would be willing to loosen the tax constraints – a privileged policy by the parts of the center -LEFT.
“I want to strategically make sure that we have at least two options and that we only need it,” said Merz in the debate on Sunday. Pressed on the two options he meant, he said: “Perhaps the Social Democrats, perhaps the Greens”.
The CDU and its sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), currently run the polls at around 30%, making Merz the precursor to replace the Chancellor of the SPD Olaf Scholz. AFD is second at 21%.
