Germany jails man for supporting Russia — RT World News

A German national has been sentenced to three years in prison for expressing support for the Russian side in the Ukraine conflict online

A Hamburg court sentenced a local man to three years behind bars, finding him guilty of justifying “Russian Aggression” against Ukraine and possession of an illegal weapon.

The 32-year-old defendant, identified only as Marcel J., ran a pro-Russian Telegram channel, whose logo and name are based on the unregistered Russian ultranationalist Drugaya Rossiya (Other Russia) party, Die reported. Welt, citing the indictment.

Besides sharing “national-Bolshevik pro-Russian ideas”, the accused openly referred to Ukraine as “terrorist state” and used the “Z” symbol – commonly associated with Moscow’s special military operation in the country – which had been partially banned in Germany. In addition, Marcel J. was found in possession of an illegally large knife, deemed to be a cold weapon.

His co-accused, identified only as another 35-year-old man, was charged with complicity but only sentenced to six months in prison. A court spokesperson explained that Marcel J.’s long sentence was largely due to his prior criminal record and, in particular, a recent conviction for assaulting a journalist at a public event in late 2021.

The man was found guilty of the assault in April by a Berlin court and sentenced to two years and four months in prison. From now on, the two convictions will be combined, and Judge Marcel will obtain the total sentence for each of them, as required by German law.
