German police block parts of Dresden after confrontation with gunman

BERLIN — German police blocked off parts of Dresden’s historic old town on Saturday morning and evacuated a shopping center due to a confrontation with an armed assailant in which two hostages were taken.

Police said they believe the suspect, whom they identified as a 40-year-old German citizen, shot his mother before heading downtown. The man’s 62-year-old mother was found dead in a multi-family home in a residential area earlier in the morning.

Police said after arresting the man that the two hostages were unharmed.

The town’s traditional Christmas market was not allowed to open on Saturday morning due to the unstable situation.
