ADVERTISEMENTThe new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz intends to declare a state of emergency on migration, confirmed Euronews on Thursday.
Government representatives told Euronews that Merz wanted to declare a national emergency to intensify increased deportations of people who try to enter Germany illegally via a safe country of the EU.
Merz and Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt wish to invoke article 72 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.
This would mean that national law would apply to border protection and internal security with immediate effect.
However, Brussels should first decide this.
The ambassadors of neighboring countries are informed by the Ministry of the Interior about the decision, the newspaper said.
But it is not immediately clear when the national emergency should begin.
Government sources have told Euronews that the Interior Ministry already made in -depth preparations for the state of emergency.
On Wednesday, Dobrindt said that he had asked the federal police to tighten border controls in order to retreat more irregular migrants, including those who intended to ask for asylum.
“We will control more strictly borders … will also lead to a higher number of refusals,” said Dobrindt less than a day after being sworn.
However, Dobrindt said that vulnerable people, including children and pregnant women, would not have returned to the border.
These plans attracted criticism from Poland and Austria, and their legality was questioned by certain experts.
But it is widely considered that Merz declaring a state of emergency means that he protects himself against legal challenges.
