Georgian parliament set to pass controversial foreign agents law on Tuesday

Georgia’s parliament is set to approve a controversial “foreign agents” law on Tuesday, defying mass protests in the capital, Tbilisi, by tens of thousands of people denouncing the measure as a Russian-style attempt to crush the freedom of expression.

Previously, the final vote was scheduled for the end of this week.

However, on Sunday Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze pledged to advance a law despite public outcry, and on Monday lawmakers began speeding up procedural steps, including a vote by parliament’s legal committee.
