Georgia Holt, Cher’s mother, dead at 96, singer says – NBC Chicago

Pop singer Cher has announced the death of her mother, singer-songwriter Georgia Holt. Holt was 96 years old.

On Saturday, the “goddess of pop” broke the sad news, saying, “Mom’s gone.”

Although no cause of death has yet been revealed, Holt received public congratulations from many Cher fans after it was announced in September that Holt had been hospitalized with pneumonia.

“Our doctor looked at her and said you were going to the hospital,” Cher tweeted of her mother’s illness at the time. “So she went. Go 96 with pneumonia. She’s a champ.”

Holt, though best known for giving birth to the “Believe” singer, has had her own singing and acting career. Holt made guest appearances on shows like “I Love Lucy” and “The Lucy Show.” She also made television appearances alongside her daughter for their joint 2013 film, “Dear Mom, Love Cher.”

Holt’s death was greeted by many well-wishers on social media, including former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who tweeted: “So sorry for your loss my friend. Sending you all (love) of the world.”

“Watch what happens live!” host Andy Cohen also had a heartfelt response for Cher, responding to her mother’s death with a number of heart emojis.
