Gene Hackman, Mety Arabawa Death Investigation Update Friday to come Friday

Heads of the County of Santa Fe will update the public on Friday on the death of Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa.

The managers of the Santa Fe County Sheriff, the fire service and the New Mexico office of the medical investigator will organize a press briefing at 1 p.m. PT with updates on their latest discoveries.

Hackman, 95, and Arakawa, 65, were probably died for several days when their bodies were discovered in their santa Fe home on February 26. Hackman’s cardiac stimulator was active until February 17, according to Santa Fe Adan Mendoza’s County Sheriff.

The details surrounding the death of Hackman, Arakawa and their dog remain a mystery. Investigators excluded carbon monoxide poisoning and the gas company determined that there was no major problem with any of the gas pipes at home.

Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Sheriff responded to the house and discovered Arakawa’s body in a bathroom with prescription pills scattered on a nearby counter. Hackman’s body was found in a separate room, according to a statement of search mandate filed with the Court of First Instance of the County of Santa Fe. The two bodies showed signs that they had fallen suddenly and were partially decomposed, with bloating in the face and a mummification in the hands and feet.

The authorities have found no sign of forced entry on the property or a blunt trauma on the couple’s bodies.

While one of the couple’s dogs was found dead in a cupboard near the body of Arakawa, two other dogs found on the property were able to enter and leave the house through a door at the back of the residence, according to Mendoza.

The couple were discovered by maintenance workers from the Santa Fe Summit housing community where Hackman and Arakawa led private lives, the authorities said. They told investigators that they had not spoken to the couple for more than two weeks.

A full toxicology screen could take months, Mendoza told the “Today” show, but the medical examiner ordered that several tests are accelerated.
