  • California Governor Gavin Newsom took a trip with his family to Montana on Friday.

  • Montana is banned from state-funded travel to California due to its LGBT policies. Newsom did not travel with public funds.

  • Newsom recently ran a political ad in Florida criticizing Governor Ron DeSantis’ policies on the LGBT community and abortion.

California Governor Gavin Newsom is spending time with his family in Montana – a state on California’s list of no-go places to travel using state funds.

The governor’s office clarified that Newsom did not use public funds for the trip.

Montana, along with 22 other states, is banned from traveling using public funds due to Montana’s anti-LGBT policies.

“The travel ban applies to expenditures of public funds,” Erin Mellon, Newsom’s communications director, told Insider. “The governor’s trip is not paid for by the state. Linking the two is irresponsible and falsely implies that there is something untoward.”

Newsom vacationed in the Treasury State on Friday, but did not initially announce where he was traveling. He will return home on Monday, Mellon said. The parents of Newsom’s wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, have property in Montana. The couple also got married there in 2008, CalMatters reported.

This isn’t the first time Newsom has come under scrutiny for his personal outings.

In 2020, as COVID-19 cases spiked in California, Newsom attended a private dinner at the French Laundry after advising against social gatherings. His presence received many criticisms.

Newsom recently aired political ads in Florida on Sunday criticizing Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ LGBTQ+ and abortion policies.
