Gavin Newsom blasted for asking Californians to avoid charging electric vehicles during heatwave

Former California Assemblyman Chuck DeVore has slammed Gov. Gavin Newsom’s call for residents to avoid charging their electric vehicles as threats of blackouts and devastating heat waves continue. DeVore told “Fox & Friends First” on Thursday that people “underestimate” the amount of electricity needed to power electric vehicles, adding that the Golden State’s decision to ban the sale of gas-powered vehicles by 2035 is “a glimpse into America’s future”.

GOP LEADER SLAMS CA POWER OPERATOR TO DISCOURAGE EV CHARGING DURING HEATWAVE AFTER VOTE TO BAN GAS CARS

CHUCK DEVORE: It’s a glimpse of America’s future. It is certainly a glimpse of a path. I’d say it’s the wrong way, but look at this problem with electric vehicles. I think it’s very interesting that California today only has 600,000 electric vehicles on the road out of about 20 million in use. If they ban internal combustion engines, you’re looking at about 2 million new electric vehicles a year and they can’t even handle 600,000. You’re looking at about 14% of The California Grid dedicated to electric vehicles when people come home from work. And if all those cars are charging at the same time, that’s about a seventh of what the network needs to operate during the evening hours when things are really tight. I think we’ll get a glimpse of the future if we go all-electric and people constantly underestimate the huge amount of electricity needed to make that happen.
