Gary Neville has revealed a 30-second conversation that convinced him Steven Gerrard would never join Manchester United.

Gerrard spent his entire European career with boyhood club Liverpool, joining the academy in 1998, later leaving the club for pre-retirement to MLS side LA Galaxy in 2015.

There was a bridge that Gerrard would never cross

The current Aston Villa manager was known as a ‘club man’ despite his brief American excursion, but that didn’t stop rival sides from nearly poaching Gerrard, with Chelsea coming closest in 2005.

Although he narrowly missed captaining Liverpool while in charge of the Blues, Jose Mourinho has reportedly tried again at Real Madrid and Inter Milan, sparking interest from Gerrard.

However, there was one club that didn’t stand a chance.

In a chat with another Sky Sports pundit, Jamie Carragher, longtime Manchester United defender Gary Neville recalled the one time he tried to hit Gerrard.

Who felt a little embarrassed trying to steal his best mate at Liverpool

His longtime manager Sir Alex Ferguson was a huge admirer of the Champions League-winning midfielder and thought he would see what Neville could do on international duty with Gerrard.

“Am I going to be fined by the FA for this, for an illegal approach?” Neville first joked about typing.

“I think it would be something casual, it wouldn’t be like ‘go poach it’ or anything like that.

Neville was well known for being a teacher’s pet when it came to Fergie

“But talk to him, see what his plans are, where does he like to eat? How was he? This kind of thing, have a conversation.

Neville has revealed he was part of the plot to tempt the Premier League’s all-time top goalscorer Alan Shearer to Old Trafford but was too young to have much impact.

With the bigger position in the game later, the legendary No.2 tried his hand with Liverpool-born candidates.

And Neville had the same with Newcastle legend Shearer

“I think it happened a couple of times with England with me, where I spoke to Alan Shearer at Euro 1996,” Neville explained. “I had a conversation with him.

“But I was more of a junior then, so I couldn’t have a serious conversation with him.

“Certainly with Wayne Rooney had a little chat, but again he’s a younger player so you can’t put too much pressure on him.

Neville succeeded with Rooney

“With Stevie, it was a complete assault. Let’s get him out of there. I want him out of there.

“To be fair, Stevie’s response was, he said, ‘My family and I could never go back to Liverpool again.’

Gerrard was short and quick with Neville

“It was a very short conversation. He was very loyal to the Liverpool fans. Not as loyal I think when [Chelsea’s] John Terry walked around his room.

“I think John Terry got about ten minutes from him, I probably got about 30 seconds.”
