It was revealed on Monday that the Red Devils had become the favorites in the race to sign the Brazilian striker.
However, they would always be required to activate his liberation clause, but hope to have terms in place next month when they still have head rooms under the rules of profit and sustainability.
Mail Sport had previously revealed that Newcastle United was the main competitors of Cunha’s signature because they wanted to use it to the left of their attack.
But the 25 -year -old seems to have been influenced by the prospect of playing a central role in the overhaul of the Ruben Amorim team.
Now, the former Manchester United Star Neville returned his verdict after noting that they “desperate” to attack the players after a bad season.

The Brazilian star of Wolves has been linked to a number of Premier League teams and has a liberation clause of 62.5 million pounds sterling
Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “They are desperate in this position, it would be suitable for the system.
“They left Jadon Sancho, Antony and Marcus Rashford to leave, they are playing with Garnacho at the moment, but that leaves them unbalanced.
“They need someone who can beat players, someone who is just as good to run in the middle with the ball.
“They have to score goals, Manchester United”.
Neville’s comments came with United having scored only 38 goals in 34 championship games so far this season, letting them languish in 14th in the Premier League.
Although they scored five goals in the middle of the week to make an astonishing return against Lyon in the Europa League, they had trouble scoring regularly.
Indeed, they lost 1-0 at home against Cunha’s current employers on Sunday – a match in which they only managed two shots on the target.

Although attentions are now naturally turning to European competition with a semi-final of the Europa League to come, United must be better in attack.
This is particularly the case with a tie in the semi-final on two legs against Athletic Club to come to the competition.
The Spanish part will also have the additional motivation of wanting to move to a final which will be played in his hometown of Bilbao on May 21.
Before the first stage of this equality sees them going to the Basque country, United is in action against Bournemouth on Sunday.
