Gareth Southgate watches on as Rangers star Jack Butland concedes freak Celtic goal after only 21 seconds

Celtic wasted no time opening the score in the Old Firm and manager Brendan Rodgers couldn’t believe it.

The Hoops silenced a bouncing Ibrox side after just 21 seconds thanks to a freak goal from Daizen Maeda.

Rodgers couldn’t hide his joy in front of the goal

But it’s not the sight England manager Gareth Southgate wanted to see when he was spotted in the stands.

He was reportedly eyeing possible Euro 2024 call-up Jack Butland, but he was left struggling by the shock strike.

Rangers kicked off the derby and looked to attack from the start, but a long ball rolled to fellow Englishman Joe Hart.

The ex-Man City and Tottenham star then launched the ball forward and it fell to Gers captain James Tavernier.

However, the usually calm right-back hesitated and was chased down by Maeda who put pressure on from behind.

As Tavernier then attempted to clear, the ball bounced off the Japan international and hit the back of the net from the edge of the box past former Manchester United player Butland, who has nine caps for the England.

It was the perfect start for Rodgers’ team and he couldn’t hide his joy.

The Celtic boss celebrated the ball coming in before turning to his coaching staff and laughing.

Southgate, however, will have to do a lot of thinking as, despite making some good saves, Butland then conceded Matt O’Riley’s penalty in the first half as the Bhoys took a 2-0 lead at Ibrox.
