Gareth Southgate and three players including Jude Bellingham and Conor Gallagher received 3/10 in damning England ratings after Slovenia party

England limped through to the last 16 of Euro 2024 with another disappointing performance, this time against Slovenia.

The Three Lions faced heavy criticism after their 1-1 draw with Denmark and those concerns will only grow following Tuesday’s 0-0 stalemate.

Two draws and a win against Serbia were ultimately enough to finish top of Group C and set up a round of 16 clash against the Netherlands.

The disciplined and tireless Slovenians finished the group stage undefeated and qualified themselves for the round of 16.

But England’s failure to beat a team ranked 52 places below them, who have never won a European Championship match, leaves manager Gareth Southgate with difficult questions to answer.

England superstars such as Jude Bellingham appeared perplexed at times by the lack of ideas during a difficult first half and boos could be heard from some of the traveling faithful.

The urgency grew in the second half and the crowd did their best to lift the Three Lions, but it was the same old story in Germany: success, ultimately, but with little or no conviction.

‘Dragged’

Conor Gallagher for Trent Alexander-Arnold was the only change from the starting XI for the first two group matches.

But the Chelsea midfielder was hooked at half-time and replaced by Kobbie Mainoo after a poor 45 minutes.

Durham rated him 3/10 and said: “He didn’t make the impact he wanted and got dragged down.”

“Capable of much more”

Bellingham cut a deeply frustrated figure as he struggled to assert himself in the match.

After winning the Champions League and La Liga Player of the Season with Real Madrid, the 20-year-old’s tournament has undoubtedly stuttered since the goal against Serbia.

Durham gave him a 3/10 and said: “He’s capable of so much more.

“Against a team that just defends, I expect Jude to have fun.”

“It’s always difficult”

Beyond the players, much of the blame for England’s lack of inspiration will lie with manager Southgate.

With Slovenia still expecting eleven players to be behind the ball for extended periods, England’s attack once again struggled to find answers.

Southgate’s replacements Mainoo and Cole Palmer were rated 8/10 and 7/10 respectively, but Durham hit the Three Lions boss with a 3/10 and said: ‘He always struggles to break down a low block .”
