Galaxy Z Flip 6 could feature IPS LCD display

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 brought a major upgrade in terms of the size of the Cover Display. The Z Flip 4 and Flip 3 had 1.9-inch Cover Displays that weren’t much use, and Samsung fixed that by equipping the Flip 5 with a 3.4-inch Cover Display.

It’s been known for a while that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 will also have a 3.4-inch cover display, but it seems that one important piece of information has gone unnoticed: the Galaxy Z Flip 6’s cover display could use an IPS LCD panel instead of a Super AMOLED panel.

It’s 2024 and LCD screens are no longer fashionable.

This information comes from a leaked image that highlights some of the best features of the Galaxy Z Flip 6. The image also includes the full spec sheet of the phone and lists the display technology for the second screen/cover display as IPS.

If true, this would be a notable downgrade from the Z Flip 5, which sports a Super AMOLED panel for both of its displays. IPS LCD panels can’t match the contrast of OLED panels because they use a backlight and can’t turn off individual pixels to produce deep blacks, and they also tend to be more power hungry.

Sure, on a 3.4-inch screen, the low power efficiency might not be a deal breaker. But you will notice a difference in image quality, and given that Samsung is increasing the price of the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip lines this year, such a downgrade would be unacceptable.

However, it’s possible that this information isn’t accurate. Rumors and leaks about the Galaxy Z Flip 6 have been circulating for months, but until today, we haven’t seen any signs that the Z Flip 6 has an IPS LCD display.

Luckily, we’re less than a week away from Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event, so we’ll learn the truth soon enough.
