Bringing together a turbulent world thanks to the cinema, the 78th Cannes Film Festival has died largely without a hitch – despite a day of films honoring Ukraine at the start, two Iranian filmmakers persecuted in competition and provocative films of Israel and Gaza in various sections. In other words, unless you count the huge power failure that hit the whole region on the last day of the festival, disrupting projections and causing general confusion among the festive.
Fortunately, the festival had current rescue generators, ensuring that the show continues at the Palais, where the president of the jury Juliet Binoche and eight other cinematographic artists took the stage to present their awards during the closing ceremony.
The Grand Prix – essentially the finalist of The Palme – went to the family drama of the director of Nowegian, “Sentimental Value”, on the attempt of a filmmaker difficult to reconcile his distant relationship with his daughter of actor in the casting in his most personal film.
The star of “Little Sister”, Nadia Melliti, won the prize for best actress. The actor’s best honors went to Wagner Moura for “the secret agent”, in which he plays a father who disguises his identity to try to escape the assassination during the military dictatorship of Brazil. Kleber Mendonça Filho won the best director for the same film.
In town to support his film “Heads or Tails?” (in which he plays Buffalo Bill), John C. Reilly surprised the public by singing “Life in pink” – with excuses, in English. “In one way or another, something unexpected always happens when I am in Cannes,” said Reilly, presenting the best scenario price to Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne for “young mothers”.
The jury prize was divided between the Spanish director Olivier Laxe for “Sirat” and “Sound of Falling” of the Héliclie German Mascha Schilinski, undoubtedly the two most original voices in this year’s competition.
The jury also gave a special prize to the Chinese director Bi Gan for “Resurrection”.
Alice Rohrwacher presented the camera trophy for the first feature film to the director of “the president of the president” Hasan Hadi, who accepted the first prize never given to an Iraqi film in Cannes.
In addition to Binoche, the predominantly female jury of this year included Italian actress Alba Rohrwacher, Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia, the French-Moroccan writer Leïla Slimani, the American stars Halle Berry and Jeremy Strong, the South Korean Hong Sangsoo, the Mexican director Carlos Reygadas and the filmmaker Congolese Dieudo Dieudo.
